The LCP file type that you’re seeing (.lcpl) is a Protected PDF or EPUB. To read this file on your computer, you’ll need to download Thorium Reader to your PC or Mac. Several globally available e-ink devices already support LCP-protected ebooks (see here).
How to successfully open the file:
First, click or tap the Download button for the book on NetGalley, and install Thorium Reader (click here to download). Then locate the file in your Downloads folder on your computer, and double-click on the file you downloaded from NetGalley to open it in Thorium Reader.
You can select Thorium Reader as the preferred program for these file types going forward. Here are detailed steps for PC and Mac:
On a PC:
- Right-click the file you want to change the associations/default program for the .lclp file you downloaded
- Click “Open With”
- Select the program you want to be associated with this file type (Thorium Reader) - this will now be the default program. If you don’t see it in the list, select "other" and then locate the application in the Applications folder
- Click “Always use this app to open .lcpl files” so that all files with this extension/type will open with this program
On a MAC:
- Right-click the file you want to change the associations/default program for the .lclp file you downloaded
- Click “Open With”
- Select the program you want to be associated with this file type (Thorium Reader), and this will be the default program. If you don’t see it in the list, select "other" and then locate the application in the Applications folder
- Click “Change All” so that all files with this extension/type will open with this program
