We recommend EPUB files since they provide a better overall reading experience. With EPUB files, text will re-flow and can be resized on different devices.
For Kindle, files must be below 24MB to be delivered. Fixed format MOBI files will work on Kindle devices, but may have issues on the Kindle app for Apple devices. NetGalley automatically converts EPUB to MOBI using KindleGen.
NetGalley accepts EPUB2 and EPUB3 files. Fixed layout EPUB3 files will only work with the NetGalley Shelf app. They are not compatible with our other download options. If you are delivering a fixed layout EPUB3 file, please be sure to update your Reading Options to ensure the appropriate settings are in place. If you are unsure, please reach out to us!
Please see our file optimization suggestions here, especially if you are delivering PDF files instead of EPUB. There are important file size limitations for PDF files.
For fixed layout books, PDF will work best. Fixed-layout EPUB files cannot be opened on all devices. For Kindle, we’ve found that fixed format MOBI files will work on actual Kindle devices, but there are issues with those files on the Kindle app for Apple devices. We’re working to move to ACS5, which will address the EPUB issue we’re seeing for most devices (for which we use Adobe DRM) and are continuing to look into the issue with the fixed format MOBI files of Kindle apps.
For audiobooks, your file must be a zip file with a collection of mp3 files inside. The listening order should be noted. The maximum file size for audiobooks is 1 GB. Please see the full file requirements for audiobooks here.
